HOW TO BUILD A MODERN HORIZONTAL RAILING

The last element of our Auburn + Dayton basement remodel project was a custom railing. This stair railing continues to bring all kinds of enjoyment to us and our clients. Fortunately enough for us we get to call our client’s friends and see this beautiful yet functional railing all the time. It’s by far the one thing we’ve created that gets the most questions about how to build one at home. So here’s a step by step guide on how to build a modern horizontal railing.

Instructions for a modern horizontal railing

  1. Install your posts at the top and bottom of your stairs. For this railing we used a 4 x 4 post and attached the upper to the wall and stringer, and lower to the floor and stringer with construction screws. Make sure to hold a level tight on all sides prior to fully driving in construction screws.
  2. Once your posts are installed and sturdy, measure the total span of your railing to determine the length of the horizontal balusters, or rails, whatever you prefer to call them. Traditional balusters are vertical and installed every 6 inches, but this modern horizontal railing is a different design.
  3. Once you have your measurement, cut the horizontal boards. If your posts are level you’re looking at a 45 degree cut.
  4. To install the horizontal balusters, pre-drill holes on the tops and bottoms of the horizontal boards near the ends with a 3/16” drill bit. This will avoid splitting of the wood when you fasten with your construction screws.
  5. Attach your bottom board first, followed by the middle and top. We recommend spacing the boards by 3” – 5”.
  6. Once everything is installed and fastened tight, it’s time to fill all holes with wood filler or plastic wood. Allow to dry as recommended on the product packaging prior to sanding smooth. A good rule of thumb is a day, unless you’re in a rush to finish. Also, make sure the filler you choose is painted or stainable.
  7. Finally, it is time to finish with paint or stain.

What size lumbar did you use for Railings? 2×4’s?

    1. Danielle Gutelli Avatar

      Hi Kate,

We used 1×6 smoothed premium pine.

Love this design! Trying it out for the railing in our house and was just wondering what the height was of your 4×4 post? Me and my husband have differing opinions on what it should be haha 🙂

    1. Michael Gutelli Avatar

Hi Larissa! That is awesome! This is a tricky question, however, as this was installed in a basement with very low ceilings and an incredibly steep staircase. I believe the height of the newel post was around 36″ – 40″, which is perfect for a knee wall but slightly shorter than what you see in a traditional stair case. Let us know what you decide to go with, and also be sure to check into your local building codes!

Did you use a jig to get the screws into the horizontal boards?

    1. Michael Gutelli Avatar

Hi Amy. Yes, we pre-drilled pocket holes with our Kreg Pocket Hole Jig, then filled with wood filler, sanded and painted.

I love this design! Do you have any pictures on the site taken from the bottom of the stairs looking at the backside of the railing? I am curious in seeing how it looks where the stair treads meet the trim. I am building a custom staircase in our old farmhouse, and I would love to use these railings for a modern look!

      Emma,

I have searched high and low for this picture and I don’t have one. We are going to be publishing a new staircase very soon!

      Thank you.

We love your design and are hoping to copy it for our home. How would you handle it with stairs that have a landing and then turn to the upper set of stairs? One post on the landing with the lower and upper stair rails connecting to same post? Thank you!!

    1. Danielle Gutelli Avatar

      Hi Jill,

That is exactly what we would do! We cannot wait to see what you do. Please share it our way.

This looks beautiful and I love the style. Can you remove and reattach this if need arises?

      Hi Diane,

      I don’t see why you couldn’t!

Thanks for the reminder that proper leveling is very crucial when it comes to custom railing designs. I’d like to get new railings for my stairs soon because my kids are at the age when they like moving around the house restlessly. I will need to get better childproofing in my home for to keep them safe.
