  • SPRING 2020 ONE ROOM CHALLENGE WEEK 1

It’s finally here!!! Week 1 of the Spring 2020 One Room Challenge! To say we are excited would be a complete understatement. For the first time ever we get to bring you with us on an 8 week journey as we transform our kitchen, dining room and living room area! Not only is this our first time as Featured Designers it’s also the first time ever the ORC has been 8 weeks. Typically this is a 6 week journey but because of the current climate it’s been extended an extra 2 weeks and had a delayed start and we for sure can’t thank Linda enough for that! You get to see the highs, the lows and everything in Covid delays with all the unexpected timing of all things in life. So let’s get this party started!

If you’re finding us for the first time from the One Room Challenge, welcome! We’re Danielle and Michael Gutelli! And together, we’re Clark + Aldine.

Clark + Aldine is named after the Chicago streets where we first met, and was born out of a love for purposeful design and everyday functionality. What we didn’t know then was that our passion and design influence would continue to grow, and we would soon leave our established careers to pursue Clark + Aldine full time. But like they say, when you know, you know! Learn more about us.

This year’s ORC is like no other. We are not only tackling our 1950’s galley kitchen but taking down two walls to create a complete open concept. The overall goal for us is to always create a space that is as functional and purposeful as possible. Knowing how we use our space helped lead us to the overall design, function and purpose for the space. For this project the number one priority is to create a place for everyone to gather, be conversational and enjoy everyday moments together.

Before we get any further in the process let’s make sure you get a full idea of what we are working with.

    Before Images

It’s hard to believe we are about to take down a wall that now divides our kitchen and living room area. The living room we just redid during the Fall 2019 ORC. I think what we dislike the most about this space is the absolute lack of counter space!!! I basically have one 36 inch countertop to work with before I hit the sink and everything is so broken up. The cabinets are falling apart and don’t even let me get started with the tile job. Let me just leave you with its multiple layers of tile on top of each other and I don’t even know how they cut the tile or actually spaced it out when they were installing it! Oh and the lighting…how could I forget how awesome the one light inside the kitchen is.

So now that you can see exactly where we stand today, let’s break down where we want to go and how we plan to make that all come together over the next 7 weeks. Each project we tackle has four phases: Plan, Design, Build Out and Style. You can get a full picture of how we create a kitchen space from Our Kitchen Design Guide.

    Our Space Plan

Space planning a kitchen project is the key to ensuring all the elements work together and actually fit into the space you are trying to design. We’ve fully rendered our kitchen to bring it to life for you. With two small dudes I have dreamed of having a kitchen with an island to cook, create, do homework, socialize and gather together as a family. I desperately wanted to keep a separate space for more intimate gatherings. We worked together to find a way to bring the two spaces together. This is where the upper cabinets came into play to join the kitchen area with the coffee bar/dining room space.

    Our Design

Pinterest is my favorite place to start with any design. It’s the perfect visual search engine. From there I always create a moodboard to bring the project to life. This is my favorite way to see where my design inspiration is going and how I am going to pull all the elements together in real life. Clearly you can see I’ve got a black, white and wood thing going with this design! I really wanted to work in all the texture and layers into this space. The brick and tile are going to help bring this to life while the wallpaper is going to create a major design impact that is unexpected! Lighting is absolutely key in any space and in this space it is going to be a show stopper for sure!

    Build-out

Once all the design is in place we move onto the build-out, demo, construction…basically all the things that take your space from what it was into what it is going to be. Having a fully baked design concept makes the phase run a lot smoother. Because, let’s be honest guys, all construction projects run into problems. And we’re about to open up not one but two original 1950 walls, and you never know just exactly what you are going to find inside these walls until you open them up! Not to mention one of them is load bearing and happens to be the main support holding up the 2nd floor of the house!

Next week we will bring you with us for all the fun through this process. Get ready for all the demo – kids included – but don’t worry they’ve got all the safety gear.

    Styling

The last part of any design is the styling. This phase is what makes your space really feel like you! Can’t wait to take you with us on this journey with us!. I always feel like those last details take the longest in making everything really come together. Here’s where I get to layer in all the design elements from rugs, pillows, furniture, art, decor and all the plants…you can never have too many, right?!?

You can follow us along on our journey over on Danielle’s Instagram page. And stay tuned because tomorrow we are dropping a brand new podcast series inside our Stay True Podcast with all kinds of behind the scenes insight and interviews you aren’t going to want to miss. Subscribe today on Apple or Spotify and you’ll get the notification right to your phone!

AND don’t forget to check out all the other rad Featured Designers and their projects happening right now too!

Be sure to check back into the ORC tomorrow with all the amazing Guest Bloggers participating this Spring, it’s the biggest guest participation yet, it’s going to be epic, I just know it! And I have a few awesome friends participating this year and they are absolutely killer at what they do!!!

  • HOW TO CREATE A MOOD BOARD

I need to let you in on a little secret. I’ve designed more rooms than I can count without a mood board. In fact until I did my first One Room Challenge I had never actually created my own mood board before (a big thank you to my bestie Erica who actually made my ideas come to life on paper). It is really wild to think about because you guys, mood boards are where all your ideas inside your head come to life. I love to create multiple rounds of mood boards with clients. Today I am going to share with you how I personally like to create a mood board.

I believe that there is no right or wrong way to create a mood board. The purpose of the board is to bring your ideas and inspiration to life to help guide you with the design choices you are going to be making to pull your space together.

    Where To Start

Pinterest is a great place to start. Here you can search for inspiration that is entirely imaged based. I love to make individual boards per space to help collect my thoughts and see where I am going. I tell my clients to just pin everything and anything they like. Ideally I am looking for them to provide me with information about the overall vibe they want the room to create. No need to get specific on me yet! By this I mean I don’t need to know the exact rug you want or what light you’ve been lusting over for months. But at the same time if it’s a piece you just can’t live without or already have going into your space by all means pin that too!

    Collect Images

Once you’ve pinned all the things it’s time to go back through your board and see what correlation you are having. More often than not you are going to notice you have trends that you are drawn towards. I like to take mental notes of these things as I scroll through the pinterest board. From there I pick several images to work with based on the repeated trends I am seeing. I either take a screenshot of these images or drag them to my desktop.

    Find A Platform

Now it’s time to start building your mood board. You have lots of options for where you can create one. I actually use two different places to build them. First I create what I call a ‘working mood board’ in dropbox paper. I call these my working mood boards because these are the images I pull off pinterest to see if we are moving in the right direction with the design. From there I pick two to three images that truly work as our design inspiration and we work with those to pick out more specific design elements that we hope to land inside the space. I build a second mood board inside Apple Keynote

Please note there are plenty of other platforms you can use to create mood boards and for the moment this is what I am using. I too could change based on what platform I am liking working with.

    Design From Inspiration

Now is the time to get into the specifics of your project. I love adding lighting, paint, furniture,  fixtures, decor and flooring into my mood boards. These can either be the exact ones you are going to use or ones you are inspired by. This last part is how your project comes to life.

Best Places to Buy Temporary Wallpaper

I love a good statement design. I wrote all about my love for statement design here! I also have talked about ways to create statement ceiling designs and on how to make statement design with tile. So why haven’t I written about another great way to create statement design through wallpaper. I know that word is nerve racking to lots of clients of mine. That’s why today instead of talking about wallpaper we are going to chat about removable wallpaper and my favorite place to buy removable wallpaper from.

What’s so good about removing wallpaper is it gives you the same impact that wallpaper does just without the actual wall commitment to it. While wallpaper has evolved over the years and it doesn’t nearly destroy your walls as much as the really old kind of wallpaper does, it is still a task to get down if you do change your mind or decide you are over it. What I love about removable wallpaper is it’s easy to take down. The price point is relatively similar and the amount of time it takes to put up is about the same.

  • HOW TO TRANSFORM A BEDROOM IN A WEEKEND

We love weekend projects. It feels so good to be able to complete something in a weekend’s time. You’ve probably guessed that by now since you’ve seen us tackle 3 different organization projects, a simple paint project, a kitchen update and even an entire powder room! Today we are going to kick it up a notch with how to transform a master bedroom over a weekend.

    Planning

Before taking on any project the planning process is the key to your success. You want to have everything mapped out prior to starting the project. Know where you want your project to go. For a master bedroom concept Pinterest is a great place to start.

    Sourcing

Once you’ve got your plan figured out you want to source all your material. It is never a good idea to start a project without your materials already there. Especially when we are talking about transforming a space in a weekend. Turns out you usually can’t get furniture delivered in a week.

Here are some of our favorite suggestions when thinking about transforming your bedroom in a weekend’s time!

    Paint

Paint is always a good idea. It is the easiest way to completely transform the look, feel and vibe of your space. Here’s the best way to paint a space and find the perfect color you are looking for

    Create an accent wall

Accent walls are another idea to create an entirely new look. We love experimenting with them. From board and batten walls to textured walls, each gives a totally different feel to the way you previously looked at the room!

    Lighting

Changing the room’s lighting can make a major statement. If you can’t budget that in your bedroom makeover at least change out the lightbulbs. Having the right lightbulbs in your space is truly transforming.

    Bedding

New bedding makes me happy! I love layering in throws and pillows. But ultimately when designing a space I want to create a bed that works for the person making it everyday!

    Rug

A new rug is a great way to make your room feel more inviting and comfortable. Making sure you have the right size for your room is key. Here’s our guide on how to choose the perfect rug!

    Furniture

Changing out your furniture isn’t always part of a makeover. We’ve found switching out nightstands is a more affordable option when looking to update any furniture piece in a space.

  • WHY WE PAINTED VS STAINED OUR FRONT PORCH

This front porch of ours has seen many looks. When we first bought our house the porch was white with white stairs and railings. It looked cute…but it was not done right. The previous owner had built it using non-treated lumber, and on top of that painted with interior paint. To say it was destroyed would be an understatement. So we tore it all off and re-built it. For a year it sat and baked in the sun and soaked up all of the rain and snow before we got around to finishing it up. We decided to paint it black! And in doing so we received a ton of questions, the main one being why we painted vs stained our front porch.

    BEFORE
    AFTER

The main reason we chose to paint over stain for our front porch was because we wanted it to be a true black. The best way to accomplish this is through paint. Stain will achieve a dark color but it will never be as black as black paint. In the sun it would show the greens found in the treated lumber, which in totality would appear more of a brown. Definitely not the look we were going for.

To achieve the look we first power washed the porch and steps. After allowing a week or so to fully dry and cure (because we just wanted the weekend to jump back in) we started the paint project! We chose Sherwin Williams Exterior Resilience in Tricorn Black. Cutting a porch and steps is a bit different, and it allows you to be a bit more liberal with the amount of paint you stuff and brush into the seams where planks meet. You want to make sure you really get it in there good because the exterior paint is super thick – a stain is far more liquidy and would soak in everywhere quick.

Once you cut it all in it is time to roll. Similar to a wall, you start at one side and carry your path down to the other side until you have the full surface covered. MAKE SURE you give yourself room to get off of the porch! You don’t want to paint yourself into a corner. For us, we have no railings on the porch so getting out of the way was easy. When you finish with the porch base move on to your treads and risers from top to bottom.

We applied 3 coats because Michigan weather is crazy. So far after 2 years the paint has held up wonderfully! We will have to touch up a few spots this Spring because of all the traffic it has seen with our renovation projects. Turns out when you’re loading in and out a ton of heavy furniture, appliances and material a porch is likely to see the effects!

We hope this helps you with your next porch project. These steps also apply to concrete or stone porches too! Just make sure to visit your local paint supplier and get their recommendations on paint type and supplies.

  • HOW TO PARTICIPATE IN THE ONE ROOM CHALLENGE

The One Room Challenge comes twice a year, once in the Spring and then again in the Fall. It might be safe to say it is one of my favorite times of the year. Not only does it give us a chance to completely transform a space and bring our readers with us, it allows us to come together with a massive online community while each participant transforms their own space too!  There is no winner and loser in this challenge. The ORC is a time to celebrate the love of design and just what can be done in a short period of time.

Wondering how you can join in on all the fun? I’ve got you covered. Today I am going to break down exactly what you need to know in order to participate in the One Room Challenge!

    modern master bathroom faucet

The best place to start is to check out what other people have done for the One Room Challenge. Lucky for you we’ve got plenty to show off. Take a look at all five of our previous ORC projects to start to wrap your head around how we document the process. Make sure to click through all 6 weeks of the process.

    01 – Master Bedroom

    02 – Master Bathroom

    03 – Shared Kids Room

    04 – Mudroom/Laundry Room

    05 – Living Room

Now before I breakdown for you how to actually document the process and fully participate in the One Room Challenge there are some things you need to know first.

    modern living room design

    Set A Budget

This is always first on my list. Because you guys without a realistic budget you really can’t do much. So before you go any further with a project you need to decide on how much you’ve got in a budget to make that transformation happen.

    Pick A Space

Next, based on your budget pick a space you want to transform. Remember that it is important to stay realistic with what you can actually do with your budget and the timeline of the ORC.

    Create A Timeline

The ORC runs for 6 straight weeks from start to finish. This means when documenting you are allowing yourself time to capture your afters, so if you plan to do this live know that you really don’t have 6 weeks…it’s more like 5 weeks and maybe a couple days.

We like to create a full project timeline for any project we are working on. This way we know what is happening when and how we plan to finish the project on time. Pre-planning any project is key to your success. You need to allow for products to get to your space. Especially if you are dealing with any custom ordering! Timing is key here.

This is the easy part. Head over to the One Room Challenge and sign up as a guest participant. iImply give your email and answer a few questions and you’re in! From there Linda, the creator of the One Room Challenge, will be in touch. She’s amazing you guys and will guide you through the process. Here’s a full breakdown of exactly what will happen.

Clark and Aldine home renovation projects

    Create A Content Plan

As a part of the One Room Challenge not only are you dedicating yourself to transforming a space, you are also saying “hey world I am going to showcase to you just how I am doing this room.” Heck yes, you guys! This is the fun part as long as you’ve got it planned out before you start! Here’s a simple guideline we’ve used in the past.

    Week 1 – Intro Project

Show befores of the space you are going to transform. Talk about why you chose the space and what you plan to do. This is a great time to show your mood board and what you find to be inspiration for you.

    Week 2  – Progress + Design Decisions

Each week from here on out we like to share our progress with our readers. Or if you are doing this just on Instagram you can show your followers that way too! During week 2 it is always a great chance to talk through what your design plan is and why you are going in that direction. Remember you don’t have to have a degree in this to tell someone why you like what you like!

Week 3 – Progress + More Design Decisions + Teach Something

Again, give your readers an update as to what is happening in your space. Provide even more insight into what design decisions you’ve made and now you have the ability to showcase some of the decisions in real life. During week 3, if at all possible, we like to teach our readers something about the process or how we did something along the way. We love any opportunity we can to teach others to do better in their own line and this really provides us with a platform to showcase how to make their home feel more like home to them.

Week 4- Progress + Teach Something

Here you have it again. Give your audience and update and for sure teach them something about your project!

Week 5 Progress + What Is Still Left

This week you don’t want to give away your entire space, but do showcase some updates. Also, this is a great time to showcase all the things you still need to wrap up. Everyone loves a good storyline and a cliffhanger leaving them wondering if you will actually pull this off!

    Week 6 – Final Reveal

This post is always my favorite. Here you want to not only showcase the beautiful space you transformed but how different it looked from the beginning!

***The spring 2020 One Room Challenge is Running for 8 Weeks Below is our revised schedule for this season***

Week 4 – Progress + Teach Something + Share Challenges

Here you have it again. Give your audience an update and teach them something about your project! With this year being different from any other year we are planning to talk about what life has looked like for us through a renovation during a pandemic.

Week 5 – Progress + Teach Something + Share Challenges

During week 5 we plan to update our readers on everything that has happened or maybe not happened. How we are moving forward with challenges we cannot control. And of course continue to educate our audience along the way.

Week 6 – Progress + Teach Something + Little Details

Let’s showcase the progress while getting into the details that every project has. Here we are going to show you the details that might go sight unseen but really make a difference in any project you take on. We are going to teach our audience things to think about when doing the detailed work that come into projects.

Week 7 – Progress + What Is Still Left

This week you don’t want to give away your entire space, but do showcase some updates. Also, this is a great time to showcase all the things you still need to wrap up. Everyone loves a good storyline and a cliffhanger leaving them wondering if you will actually pull this off!

    Week 8 – Final Reveal

This post is always my favorite. Here you want to not only showcase the beautiful space you transformed but how different it looked from the beginning!

    Capture All the Content

Now that you’ve got a content plan you need to make sure you capture all the content. Yep, videos and images are what you need here. You honestly can never have too much of a good thing and you guys when it comes to capturing for the ORC you want all the content you can get.

    Pro Tips:

It Does Not Have To Be Done Live

Trust us from experience. Of the 5 ORC we have participated in we have done 4 out of the 5 projects live and you guys this is a LOT. Not only are you trying to transform a space, you are trying to document how you are transforming the space. Don’t get us wrong, doing it live can be done and the 6 week timeline to transform a room is completely doable, especially if you are doing the room full time. But doing both at the same time on that timeline is wild and not worth all the stress.

    Don’t Use All Your Content

When it comes to blog posts, having content there is important. But you don’t want to weigh down the post with 1000 pictures. We like to stick to the rule of 7 to 8 pictures per post…it is more than enough. With our final reveal post we drop anywhere from 15 to 20 because we want to showcase all the killer details there.

Instagram Stories are a great way to use all that content you have collected. Not only does it bring your followers along for the journey it also allows for you to really see the full transformation happen.

    Follow Along With Others

The ORC is meant to bring people together through the love of design. This is a great time to get inspired. Find other amazing stories and accounts out there. Connect with other people designing while you’re designing beside them.

  • S2 E4 – KEYS TO A SUCCESSFUL RELATIONSHIP

To anyone reading this right now it will be no surprise – we are a husband and wife team who does everything, together. We are married, parents to 2 incredible young dudes, we’re business owners, manage an insanely talented group of employees, workout together, and there’s probably a ton I left off. Essentially, we do all the things together. It has not always been easy, nor has it always been pretty…but we agreed long ago to do anything and everything possible to make our relationship the strongest. So, we decided to talk about it in depth on the podcast. Listen to “Keys to a Successful Partnership” on Apple Podcasts or Spotify.

And if you like it…like, really really loved what we had to say, please share it! Or write a review. Or subscribe to it. Actually, do it all! Because we really appreciate you and all you do to support us. And you are awesome.

    Stay Safe. Be Well.

  • 5 WAYS TO A BETTER YOU

If you’re anything like me you’ve reached the point where you really need to do something more. It is Monday, April 20, 2020 and we’ve been stuck in self-isolation for 5 weeks now in Michigan, the last 4 of which have been with no work and zero money stream coming in. We’re past the point of stress and anxiety. We’re in a serious rhythm and routine with home schooling, working together in the home office, fitness regimen, diet and Thursday date night. Things are on the up and up…but something is missing.

For me, my mind is on overdrive with ideas on how to elevate both the Clark + Aldine brand and my personal brand. The ideas are flowing, I am catching them all on paper and I am setting plans into action – at least ready for when we are unleashed back into the wild.

To get there, I outlined a set of key strategies that have empowered me to be my best self and give my absolute best effort where it is needed. Not only have these helped me be my best at business and personal development, but as an attentive and purpose driven husband and father, too. A lot can change in 5 weeks…much more than I ever thought possible.

    Train Your Body

For me that means moving my body for 30 – 60 minutes a day. We’ve been doing 1 30 minute workout in our home gym, and one outdoors – typically a power walk or walk/run with the boys. The kids need fresh air too so this is a win win for the family.

Don’t have a home gym or fitness app? Tap into the influencer community to get free at home workouts using nothing but your body. My friend, celebrity trainer Brian Mazza, shared a 30 day at home workout and it will get you feeling it!

    Drink All The Water

I can’t stress this enough. Water is the number one ingredient to living a healthy life. And you really can’t get enough of it in your body. For the last 6 months I have been throwing down at least a gallon a day, and you should too. Note – you will be making some trips to the bathroom but it will be well worth it.

Want an extra challenge? Add 10 – 20 pushups each time you go to the bathroom…you’ll be sore for a few days, but then it is savage mode!

    Invest In Coaching

This extended time at home has probably had you thinking about your career, or perhaps life in general. You may have realized you no longer want to do what you do for who you do it on behalf of, or maybe you love what you do and want to strengthen your value. In any case this is the perfect opportunity to identify a coach who can help you succeed at what is now, and what is next. There are a ton of solid, successful and talented coaches who offer virtual life coaching and business coaching.

We’re not yet at the point where we are ready to invest in a local business coach, but I am taking this opportunity to invest in both life coaching and business coaching. I’ve been following Dave Hollis for quite some time and have mass respect for the way he’s transformed his life post-Disney and into becoming CEO of the company his wife, Rachel, built. I have chosen to invest in his coaching and will be back with an update on how it has worked for me.

    Take A Course

You name it and there is a course for it. From gardening, to building furniture and becoming an award winning caliber chef, if you want it you can find someone who offers a course in it. So whether you want a new hobby or, again, want to strengthen your skillset, what better time than now to find a course and get after it.

There are a ton of free and low cost courses out there too…so take some time and research what is best for you.

    Build Your Personal Library

The libraries are closed but your brain is always open for business. As is Amazon, and hopefully your local bookstore, because we all know that local needs love in these times. So when the Netflix binges have succumbed and there is nothing left to stream, take inventory of the shelves in your space. See what you notice missing and start building your cart. Books are a great way to motivate and inspire yourself, and they happen to serve as a great source of styling for your space…it is a win win.

To get you started take a look at a quick list of recommendations I pulled together…we also have another post on books coming up soon!

  • WAYS TO PRACTICE SELF CARE EVERY DAY

Everyone needs a routine, and with a routine comes a little bit of “me” time. You absolutely have to schedule time to take care of yourself, to feed your brain and to nourish your soul. In these trying times there it is even more important that we all be cognizant of the stress and anxiety we build up inside every day and make small changes in our routine to care for ourselves. This post will be ever evolving with new content highlighting some of our recommendations for how to practice self care every day.

    Move Your Body

You can no longer say you don’t have the time to workout or go to the gym! Well, perhaps you can’t go to the gym right now. But you do have the time to move your body for 30 minutes a day. That is all it takes. You will work up a sweat quick and at the end of your workout you will feel exhausted, energized and a sense of accomplishment all at the same time.

YouTube has a ton of free workouts available. And if you can’t find one you dig, check out the fitness experts on Instagram…there are a ton of great people out there creating at home workouts to make everyone’s day a little brighter.

    Train For A Run

You can still get outside for a hard walk or run during this lock down. Whether you plan to run a 5k, 10k, half marathon or nothing at all it is still totally cool to train as if you were. So lace up the running shoes and hit the pavement with this training guide.

Oh, and if you need running shoes Nike and Adidas are running sales like every other day…so there is no better time than the present to dial in!

    Hydrate Your Body

We all need water to survive and to thrive. Getting the right amount we need everyday, however, seems to be a challenge more often than not. This quick post will give you the steps you need to ensure you’re getting in the right amount of water your body needs every day.

    Read A Book

Sometimes you need to be uplifted and inspired. Other times you just need an escape from reality for 10 or 20 pages. Either way, spending time reading every day is a good way to ensure you are feeding your mind.

Need some recommendations on what to read next? This list is what we’re indulging in now … and we have more coming soon!
